West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided on Wednesday that she will not be attending the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as prime minister on May 30 in New Delhi.

Earlier she decided to attend the oath-taking ceremony of Modi. At that time she termed the invitation of Modi to her as a constitutional invitation. However, she claimed that circumstances changed her mind.

She tweeted, "In the last one hour, I am seeing media reports that the BJP is claiming 54 people have been murdered in political violence in Bengal".

"This is completely untrue. There have been no political murders in Bengal. There is no record with us. Sorry, this has compelled me not to attend the ceremony," Mamata Banerjee added.

BJP Slammed the West Bengal chief minister over her decision. The party sources said Mamata was just skipping the event over the Modi’s decision to invite families of workers killed in the violence.

After BJP invited the kin of party workers killed in poll violence, Mamata decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Bengal was the only state where violence was reported during the Lok Sabha elections and Mamata Banerjee is trying to hide this, said Dilip Ghosh, Bengal BJP president.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo had earlier said she would attend the ceremony as "constitutional courtesy" after she received the invitation on Tuesday.

"I have spoken to a couple of other chief ministers and have decided to attend it. There are certain ceremonial programmes under the Constitution. We try to attend such events when we get an invitation for the swearing-in programmes of the president and the prime minister," Mamata had said.
